Legion of Mary
The Legion of Mary is one of the largest lay apostolic organizations in the Catholic Church. Founded in Dublin, Ireland, in 1921, it is now active in parishes throughout the world. Members strive to grow in holiness through prayer, devotion to the Blessed Virgin Mary, and active service to the Church under the guidance of their pastor.
At Prince of Peace, the Legion of Mary serves alongside our neighboring parish, St. James, as one praesidium. Together, members assist with a variety of spiritual and pastoral works, including:
- Visiting the sick in hospitals, nursing homes, and homes
- Welcoming newcomers to the parish
- Promoting devotion to Our Lady through the Pilgrim Virgin program and the Rosary
- Supporting Eucharistic Adoration and other parish devotions
- Assisting with parish ministries, retreats, and other apostolic works as requested by our pastor
- Encouraging and preparing others to receive the sacraments
Every active member commits to a life of prayer and performs a weekly apostolic work in union with Mary. The Legion also offers ongoing spiritual formation that helps members deepen their relationship with Christ and grow in holiness.
Membership
The Legion of Mary welcomes practicing Catholic men and women who desire to grow in faith through prayer and service.
Active Members
Participate in the weekly meeting and carry out a weekly apostolic assignment.
Auxiliary Members
Support the work of the Legion through daily prayer, including the Rosary and the Legion prayers, but do not attend weekly meetings or receive weekly assignments. This option is ideal for those who are unable to participate actively but wish to share in the Legion's mission.
Weekly Meetings
The Prince of Peace and St. James Legion of Mary praesidium meets every Thursday at 7:00 p.m. Meetings include prayer, spiritual formation, and discussion of members' apostolic work. Meetings generally last about 90 minutes.
